Hour By Hour

In the spring edition of On Course, we asked you to send in either a poem or a 500 word account of a day in your life in publishing. Congratulations to Pippa Mayfield and Michele Clarke, who both win a day's training. Here is Michele's winning entry...

The clock strikes at six fifteen
Am I really still that keen
To sit and tap at my machine
Hour by hour?

The day is long, no time to roam
I've tasks for work and those for home
And Now I have to write this poem
Hour by hour.

I've two jobs on for proofing books
(One for gardeners, one for cooks)
But I've yet to finish that dress with hooks
Hour by hour.

I've lunch to make, then dinner too.
Why've I still got 'women's work' to do?
At least there's my 'treasure' to clean the loo
Hour by hour.

If the sun is out, then gardening's in
If the sun is in, make time for kin
And the cat – crack open a tin
Hour by hour.

The evening's taken with a meeting
Time zaps by, it is so fleeting.
Back to work when dawn is greeting
Hour by hour.
