In-company training at Hodder Headline
The Publishing Training Centre has offered in-company training since 1997. It enables large numbers of staff to train together, with courses tailored to each publisher’s needs. Recently PTC has seen a big increase in demand for in-company training, both in the UK and overseas. In October 2006, Karen O’Brien, Training Co-ordinator at Hodder Headline, arranged for 10 of her colleagues to attend a two-day Confident to Manage course, led by John Marrin. Karen was kind enough to agree to an interview.
What made you book the in-company training?
We are keen to provide our managers with a range of tools and skills to help them in their roles as well as aid personal and career development. As this was to be rolled-out to managers across the company, sessions held in-house would be more cost-effective.
Why did you choose in-company rather than attend the same course at the PTC?
We have a long standing relationship with PTC, with staff attending many of its open courses. Also, PTC's trainers have very good knowledge of the industry. A course tailored to Hodder Headline has enabled us to deal with issues specific to our own business and culture. In addition, John's relationship with us has allowed him to gain a thorough understanding of Hodder Headline which helps in dealing with manager dilemmas.
What were the key objectives for your staff?
We wanted to provide managers with a range of skills to either make the transition into amore senior role or enable them to deal with a variety of management responsibilities from team building and motivation, to performance management and leadership.
Do you think they have been fulfilled?
Absolutely; John is a highly skilled trainer and undertakes a large amount of advance preparation to ensure the group get the most out of the course. He challenges people's thinking and gives valuable support throughout the learning process.
How well did you feel that your brief was met by your tutor, John Marrin?
Not only does John meet the overall company brief but by obtaining information from the delegates in advance he also meets individual objectives.

How did your colleagues find their tutor?
Feedback from delegates on John's courses is consistently positive. His approach puts people at ease, building trust quickly so that they can get maximum benefit from the course. As well as teaching new skills he gives confidence in their current abilities.
What immediate benefits have there been?
Managers emerge from the course energised and confident. They have been able to immediately implement their new skills back in the workplace such as managing team dynamics and performance.
Would you consider any further in-company training?
We already have! We've worked with John for several years and look forward to continuing this relationship in the future.
